Marmottans, an advanced Neolithic culture, arrived on a boat fully capable of sailing for hundreds of miles along the Mediterranean coast and drove oak pilings two meters into the subsoil to establish their settlement. They had sheep, goats, pigs, cows, and two breeds of dogs. They had domesticated plants and consumed wheat, barley, vegetables, apples, plums, raspberries, strawberries, acorns and opium poppies. Food was stored in large ceramic jars and the Marmottans cultivated flax to make linen. Their tools were mode of polished stone.
